If you seek stimulating challenges on top of the regular MBLS curriculum, you can participate in our honours programme. The honours programme of the bachelor MBLS aims to challenge talented students to develop their skills beyond the regular curriculum, providing training in additional skills that will improve your chances in your future professional life.

This programme (45 EC, of which 15 EC on top of your regular schedule) will give you:

· the opportunity to deepen or broaden your knowledge
· to acquaint yourself with research at an early stage of your studies
· the chance to explore across the borders of your discipline
· an international experience

Activities could be working with a master student in a lab, organising symposia and guest lectures, a company excursion in the Netherlands or abroad, and many more interesting projects.

Enrollment

In the fourth period of year one, students with an average grade of 7.5 or higher (7.2 for former JCU students) will be invited to participate in the honours programme. Additionally, students recommended by their tutor will also receive an invitation. Selection will take place, based on motivation that you show during an interview.

Activities

The programme is composed of a number of activities:

1. Interdisciplinary activities. You will participate in the interdisciplinary module of the Science Honours Academy, in which all honours students of the Faculty of Science participate.
2. MBLS honours meetings. You will participate in regular meetings with all MBLS honours students. The themes and content of these meetings are chosen by the honours student. Examples include guest lectures, excursions to a company, discussions of a current important finding or science books.
3. Honours assignments and courses. You will perform 2 or more honours assignments or courses. These take the form of extra assignments as part of a normal course, following a course within the Descartes college, or other honours courses available.
4. Introduction to scientific grant writing. In the third year, you will perform a bachelor thesis that includes a 5 week practical component, where you will work in the lab. As an honours student, you will write a scientific proposal for the project you perform, in the style of an NWO grant application, which you will defend orally.
