Symposium – GMO’s
On Monday the 4th of June, the symposium on genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and the poster presentations of the interdisciplinary project took place. The evening started off with Karlijn Hasaart, from the Prinses Máxima Center. She spoke about the use of CRISPR/Cas9, a technique used for genetic modification, in organoids for cancer research. Next was Suzan Slijpen, from Slijpen Legal. She told us all about European legislation of GMOs.
After these two talks, we had dinner with pizza. Following the dinner, students presented the posters they had made during the interdisciplinary project.
After dinner we had two more speakers. Esther Kok, from Wageningen University, spoke about the safety and traceability of GMOs. Our last speaker was Aniek van der Woude, who talked about Photanol BV, a company which uses genetically modified cyanobacteria to transform CO2 and sunlight in chemical compounds.
Last but not least, there was a Kahoot quiz about GMOs, with questions prepared by the speakers. The winners received a chocolate bar and eternal glory
