Symposium – Water in the Future & Interdisciplinary Poster Presentations

On Monday 15 January 2018, a symposium took place with the theme ‘Water in the Future’. It was organised by four students of different studies and that was reflected in the program. It was a very varied program with an interesting presentation for each field of study.

There were four speakers. The first speaker, dr. Gerdien van Genderen – de Kloe, talked about the screening methods used to check the quality of drinking water and how these screening methods changed over time. After her presentation, the students could have a look at the posters made by the participants of the Interdisciplinary Project. Then we continued with a presentation by prof. dr. René van Roij. He told a lot about Blue Energy, the generation of energy by mixing river water with seawater. Thereafter, the dinner took place, featuring pizza which was definitely on time. After dinner, we enjoyed the final two talks. The first one was by Stephan van de Wetering, on how water companies handle the increasing demands in drinking water standards. Finally, Willem Brandenburg spoke about how seaweed may be used in the future as a sustainable source of nutrition.

After the talks many participants stayed to enjoy a beer and discuss everything they just heard and learned about. All in all, the symposium was a great success and as the organising committee we would like to thank everybody who attended or otherwise participated in this event!
